Cousin Time

Grandpa took the boy cousins and headed to the park (I'm not sure where else they went).  While we settled in for some girl time.  We painted the nails and toes and helped them make rag-tie flipflops.

We also bought the girls matching suits while we were there.  We went swimming at an indoor community pool.  Some ladies there couldn't get over how cute they all looked in the matching suits.  I couldn't get over how amazing the indoor pool was.  It had about 15 lanes for lap swimming!!!  It also had a smaller pool where the same instructor taught a few classes while we were there.
I'm not sure anyone ever got a picture with just the boys.  I'll have to ask my SILs.

We also got in some adult girl time.  Melissa, Amanda, and I snuck of for a shopping trip.  We were going to leave Jared and Dad at the park with all the kids but Rachael decided to stay and help them.  I'm not sure if she didn't want to shop or if she was just nicer than the rest of us and felt bad.

First day of School

More on our trip to come, but in the meantime.  Here are some photos of the first day of school.

Katy getting ready to walk out the door for her first day of middle school (6th grade).

She almost missed the bus.  It comes over 5 minutes early every day.  We've missed it as much as we've made it.  It already is supposed to come at 6:50 (school doesn't even start until 7:50) so I take her across the street to her friends neighborhood where the bus comes 1/2 hour later.
Bella leaving for her first day of second grade
Xandy's first day of 4th grade
With little brother who was a little disappointed he missed the cut-off.  (I was grateful; not quite ready for my baby to be gone all day!)
I didn't even get to put them on the bus since they start late every Wednesday and the 1st day was a wednesday.  The bus was running late and I was going to be late for my class if I didn't leave so my friend Rachael saw them off.  It was upsetting to me, I like to do those little things with my kids.

Trip to Las Vegas

We went to Las Vegas to visit Jared's family this summer.  It was the first time in about 9 years that all the silbings were together at one time.  We flew out Wednesday evening.  We drove our car to a park n ride bus stop not too far from our house.  Our neighbor later picked up our car and drove it back to our house so it wasn't sitting at the bus stop for two weeks.  The bus made a few stop and then took us to Midway.  The plane we were supposed to fly on was delayed leaving the previous city.  By the time it arrived an hour plus late we were having a lightning storm so it couldn't land.  It eventually ended up being re-directed to St. Louis after circling Chicago for while.  Soon after it was diverted, the lightning stopped and we had to wait for another plane to be prepared.  By the time we landed in Vegas it was the middle of the night which made it early morning our time.  We were exhausted!!

We picked up our rental car and headed to Henderson.  Can I just say that I LOVED the rental!!!!  We got an incredible deal on it through priceline.  It was a 2012 GMC Yukon.  We're seriously considering getting one for our next vehicle.  Although, I hope I can get several more years out of my van.

The first 5 days of our trip were spent at Jared's parents house.  We went to the sprinkler parks with Grandpa, Grandma, and the cousins.  We did several evening hikes (its too hot during the day in late July).  We always seem to go to Vegas in the heat of the summer or over the Holidays.  Sometime I would like to go in the Spring or Fall when hiking is more comfortable and really explore the area.  I had to wake up early to try to work out but that was hard with late nights of fun.  I usually managed to get out around 7am and it was already 90+ by then.

We took the kids to see the new bridge that bypasses the Hoover dam.  Here are some views from the pedestrian pathway.

The kids straddling the state line.  One leg in Nevada, the other in Arizona
Kristin and Grandma came with us.
Jared was teasing me about going since I have such a bad fear of heights.  I did pretty good on the bridge though.  The concrete wall is so high that its not too bad.  I did make Jacob move to the other side when he sat down to rest though.  I wasn't comfortable with him leaning against the side with the drop-off.  I actually had more of an issue when we were driving the switchbacks down to the parking.  As we were driving a mountain goat walked down the rocks alongside the road and crossed in front of us.  I tried to get a picture but it came out blurry.
Jared's parents work in the temple a couple Saturdays a month.  Jared and I went to the temple towards the end of their shift.  The plan was to meet up when they were down and have lunch together. Mom ended up being assigned to the session we attended so that was neat.

Summer Fun

We had the Ott Family reunion at Presque Isle again this year.  This time our family spent the night so I got to run on the trail along the lake shore.  It was so beautiful and relaxing.  I wish I had enough time to run farther but I did get 8 miles in. Natalie took some pictures of us at the beach. Here are some of my favorites.

My parents got this backyard water fun for Alexandra for her birthday.  This was the test run.  The kids had a lot of summer fun with this slide.
I though the positive thing about moving away from St. Louis was supposed to be more tolerable summer temperatures.  We had a lot of days this summer that had my car thermometer reading triple digits.  If it was going be that hot, I might as well have been in St. Louis.

Jacob

Jacob was getting annoyed that those last few posts were all about the girls, so here's one for him
A park down the street from the fitness center in Chesterton that I teach at
Fishing in the back yard with Daddy
There are only 3 houses on our street.  These are the backs of the other two houses
Waiting at the bus stop for the girls to leave for school
Jacob played T-ball for the first time this summer.  It was through the YMCA so it was very laid back adn not very time consuming (which is just the way I like t-ball).  He only had about 6 other kids on his team.  He lucked out and was the white team.  Most of the games were sweltering hot.  In fact he played several games less than he was supposed to because they were the 2nd part of double headers that were cancelled after the 1st game due to heat.  I felt bad for the kids in darker colors!

School activities

(These are still pictures from last school year). The girls' school had a spirit week.

80s day (Alenna, Xandy, Katy, and Bella)
Freaky day- I wasn't sure what that meant but the girls raided the halloween bins
Nerd day- we had some fun with this one
They also had a TV turnoff week.  There were activities all through the week sponsored by the school.  We weren't able to make all of them, but we did do Zumba after school!
Katy and one of her twin friends (I think she is Madelyn but it might be Sidney)
Bella Bina
Xandy and some of her friends
Xandy had to make an inventions out of items in a paper bag her teacher gave her.  Can I just say I HATE this kind of project.  She was struggling, and I'm like the least creative person around.  Jared said he thought the teacher was just trying to find a good idea to take to one of those reality tv invention shows.  It was allowed to be a family project but we were coming up emptyhanded.  She ended up calling Mima and Pop-pop who were able to throw out some ideas.  She picked one then altered it from there.  The finished product is a swiveling two-tiered candy dish with spoons to scoop your candy.

Happy 7th Bella

She's 1/2 way to 8 and I'm just now posting these, but better late than never....(I seem to be saying that a lot lately with regards to pictures).  She wanted the same cake that she decorated for school so I had to try to recreate a similar look to hers.

She mostly got clothes, but then again, she is a girl and that was exciting

Stake Activity Day

The girls went to a stake activity day. They had a lot of fun, especially making and racing the sailboats.

Cake decorating

The girls had a school carnival with a cake/cupcake decorating contest. They looked at ideas online and each picked what they wanted to do. The baked their own cakes/ cupcakes. I helped very minimally. Since it was a contest I felt it only fair that they do the project without much help from mom. They had a lot of fun decorating them.  They didn't win and were a little disappointed.  The girl who one first place was in 1st grade and her cake was a zoo full of animals made out of fondant.  There is no way that little girl made those. animals.   I thought it was unfair to award someone 1st place who obviously didn't decorate the cake.   There were some very cute cakes entered, that you could tell were decorated by kids, that should've won.

Learning Fairs and Lost Teeth

Bella participated in the school's learning fair last year.  She did her report on Panda Bears.  She typed the info up all by herself.  She was glad to be stationed next to our neighbor (and her best friend) Alenna

Bella also lost her first tooth last winter.  As tradition, the toothfairy left a fairy tooth holder and a silver dollar for the first lost tooth.  Hmm...wonder what Jacob will get.  The fairy holders are a little too girly.

Gratitude of a mother

Sunday in Sacrament meeting one of the talks was on journal keeping.  Ironically, I wrote in my journal quite faithfully on a weekly and sometimes daily basis through high school and college.  About the time I got married and then pregnant with Katy, I tapered off.  Scapbooking took its place, and then was replaced itself by my blog.  Honestly, I felt more than a little guilty as I sat there on Sunday.  My blogging hasn't exactly been consistent this past year.  I keep blaming it on my busy schedule, but as Katy starts middle school next year, that is only going to get worse.  I need to make a commitment to do better now.  I also need to do better at being more personal.  Recording events is better than nothing but a blog is not near as personal as a journal.  Still, I could make the blog more personal, but rarely do. Part of that is me.  I'm not always comfortable sharing emotions.  I'm not one to squeal with excitement when meeting someone I haven't seen in awhile- no matter how excited i really am.  I also struggle show people how much they mean to me with words. Good thing for me that the saying goes "actions speak louder than words".  Its kind of funny since a bawl like a baby during the silliest movies and everytime I speak in church.
Anyway, this post will be more on the personal side.  We had an incident back in November that was quite frightning and slightly embarrasing for me.  For these very reasons, it took me a while to tell many people outside of family members. Jared was a work and the girls were at school.   Jacob and I had been at the YMCA.  We were driving home so I could quickly change since his friend was on the way.  Jacob sits in the very back of our van.  When we pulled in the driveway he was so excited that he unbuckled his seatbelt and jumped up.  I did NOT hear this.  I heard the van door start to slide open.  I immediately slammed on the brake and turned to scold him.  But, to my surprise, I couldn't see him anywhere in the back seat.  Then I heard him crying.  Putting the car in park, I jumped out of the car to find him laying on the ground, with the tire rolled over his foot.  In a panic I was pulling on him and yes, I even tried to lift the car off of him.  So much for that theory that mothers can lift cars off of their children.  Didn't work for me, the stupid car didn't even budge.  I was completely panicked because I was horrified that this had happened to him by me on my watch. In my panic,  Jacob, my sweet little 4 yr old, had to be the voice of reason.  ""Just get in the car and drive off my foot, mom!" he yelled at me.  Since I couldn't come up with a better option, I did just that. I jumped in the car, rolled slightly forward, and put it back in park.  Jumping back out of the car I scooped my crying little angel up and carried him inside.  I removed his shoe and sock.  His foot didn't look any different to me but I figured he probably at least had some little fractures in his foot.  Afterall, a van had been rolled on top of it.  Elevating his foot and applying an icepack, I picked up the phone.  I called Jared and then my mom.  Through my hysterical sobs they were finally able to understand what had happened.  Mom walked me through the signs to look for with his foot but recommended just waiting a little while to see how he did. (I love having a nurse for a mom.  It has saved countless co pays and doctor fees). I had completely forgotten about our friend coming over, and she arrived with Jacob's little buddy right as I was finally calming down.  Amazingly enough, although somewhat subdued he got on the floor and played with his friend.  And later that afternoon, he asked to go to his sports class, where he ran around like it was any other day.  His foot was completely fine.

I shudder to think what could have happened if he had fallen out at a different angle, or if I hadn't have stopped when I did.  I'm still amazed that he didn't at least have a broken foot.  For whatever reason, he had some gaurdian angels watching out for him that day.  I am thankful everyday that the story had a happy ending.

Fast forward three months into February.  It was an unseasonably warm day in the 60s.  And even though the wind was gusting something fierce, it felt wonderful outside.  Jacob and I came home from our daily trip to the gym.  As I looked out the back door at the blue skies, I contemplated sending Jacob out to play on the trampoline.  The wind had pushed the trampoline so that I had a perfect view of it from the kitchen window.  I had too much to do to jump out there with him, but he could jump while I made his lunch. Then, just as quickly, I changed my mind.  It was a warm day, but he was just recovering from being sick and I wasn't sure being in the wind was a good idea.

A few minutes later, as I was placing lunch on the table, we heard a strange thud in the back.  I went to the sliding door and looked out.  Our trampoline was completely gone.  Figuring it must have lifted over the fence,  we ran to the front door and over to the side of the house.  Still no trampoline.  Where the heck did it go so fast?  And then we noticed a bile of twisted metal with blue padding across the street from the front of the house in an empty lot.  I still have no idea how it managed to get there from the back yard, but I am immensely relieved that I didn't send Jacob out to play.  The little half-pint would not have stopped the 60mph wind gusts from moving the trampoline.  Once again I shudder to think what the outcome may have been if he had been on the trampoline during that particular wind gust.  Some nighbors came out to investigate.  They were eating lunch at looked out there back window to see the trampoline rolling toward them.  Definately am glad it was not in the trampoline net as it rolled down the street.  And, once again I am thankful to the guardian angel in the form of a quiet prompting that had me keep him in to play.  Someone up above is truely watching out for this little guy.

Christmas

This post is long overdue but better late than never. We spent Christmas in Ohio with my parents and Martin and his family.  Jacob was thrilled to finally meet his newest cousin.  He was no longer the baby.  (Nicholas and Natalie just had a little one so now he's really moving up).  He had been so disappointed at Thanksgiving.  He really enjoyed holding his little cousin.
The girls all took a turn holding Keltin also

Bella could really get Keltin to smile.  He was sick and miserable with a rash caused by his medicines but when she played peek-a-boo with him his smile would light up the room.  I can't find any pictures of their game though

Christmas Eve wouldn't be complete without home-made pierogies.  Although I admit to using store bought ones when its just my family.  The older girls helped Uncle Bunny make them this year.

The nativity was acted out and in Terry Buchkovich tradition started all the way with Samuel the Lamanite.  I also admit to using an abridged version when we stay at home.  Notice the big stick Jacob is holding as a shepard's staff.  There may or may not have been an incident with him and the stick thay almost brought the tree crashing to the ground.  My lips are sealed but thank goodness for quick reflexes on the part of some family members!

The main gift from Santa for all the kids.  Okay and a little bit for mom's sanity.  Santa's plan was for the trampoline to give the kids something to do outside so mom didn't go crazy with them in the tiny house we're renting until we sell our old house and no for sure that we are staying in Valpo for a few years.  Santa didn't know that the wind had other plans and blew it away mangling it in the process a mere two months later.

Grandma B opening the picture of her and Grandpa on a ship he served on with a touching poem.  Okay, I may have cried a little when she read it.

What could cause a grin so big???  This wasn't a Christmas present but a belated B-day present that was the result of efforts my multiple family members.   The picture of her first cell phone that was being shipped to our house.

Excuse the scary version of me.  They were leaving bright and early and I got up to say goodbye.  Mornings are not my best time of day.
I got the girls and their dolls matchinf outfits for Christmas
Lindsay and the kids came to visit one day.  Tyler and Jacob had fun playing on the Wii.  The Westons moved to Alaska in January so I was glad Jacob and Tyler got to play one last time.
Another scary picture of me with a cute baby.  This time I had just gotten out of the shower when my cousin and her husband arrived with this cute bundle, Evelyn!
